Course C1 –The safe loading of goods vehicles:

Vehicle based with some practical exercises with a vehicle.
Number of hours: 7
Student/instructor ratio 1:12 (although this will be less for any practical exercises)

Course overview:

A course designed to ensure a goods vehicle driver is aware of the legal requirements regarding the safe loading of various vehicles and vehicle/trailer combinations.

Work in the classroom will include consideration of the requirements of the Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1986, the Road Vehicles (Authorised Weight) Regulations 1998 and the Road Vehicles (Lighting) Regulations 1989 as they refer to the maximum weight limits of vehicles and requirements of extra markers and lighting where overhanging loads are carried. Powers of enforcement authorities in relation to the loading of goods vehicles.  Penalties for using overloaded vehicles or using vehicles with insecure loads.

Exercises will include the calculation of payload and correct distribution.

Practical and theoretical exercises, which may be carried out in the classroom or with an appropriate vehicle, will cover the availability and safe use of specialist load securing devices and load handling equipment.
