Course B4 –The environmental and other issues for drivers of goods and passenger carrying vehicles:

Classroom based.
Number of hours: 7
Student/instructor ratio 1:12

Course overview:

A course designed to provide drivers of goods and passenger carrying vehicles with knowledge of the economic, social and environmental issues surrounding road transport together with their legal responsibilities regarding the trafficking in illegal immigrants.  The course will also look at the role of the driver as ambassador for the company and consider his/her responsibilities for vehicle maintenance, company image and customer service.

This course has a morning session which is common to the drivers of goods and passenger carrying vehicles.  Where necessary, candidates will follow that common core on the trafficking of illegal immigrants and the role of the driver in portraying a positive company image.  This latter section will include the importance of driver daily vehicle checks and the part they play in good maintenance and road safety, customer service and company image.  All course participants will take part in this session together in the morning session.  Candidates will then be split into the appropriate passenger or goods carrying groups for the afternoon session which will concentrate on specialisms and competition within the appropriate sector i.e. either the carriage of goods or passengers.

During the afternoon session, course participants following the goods option will consider the requirements for “hire and reward” or “own account” operations together with a look at diversification and specialisms within the industry (these might include tanker operations, refrigerated transport or other sectors currently in the headlines).  They will also consider the merits of road-rail operations and sub-contracting work.

Participants following the passenger carrying option  will look at the various types of competition in the industry, rail, taxi, private car etc together with a consideration of current government policy for, and other important views, on road passenger transport.  This session will also consider the make up and main types of operator engaged in the carriage of passengers by road.
